Lauret Howard

Vice President and Chief Risk Officer

As NASCO’s Chief Risk Officer, Lauret Howard focuses on ensuring that the company has processes in place to comply with the risk management expectations of our customers, our senior leadership team, our Executive Committee and government regulators. She is responsible for developing and managing an enterprise risk management (ERM) framework to identify, assess, monitor and reduce potential business risks that could prevent NASCO from achieving our objectives and goals. She is also responsible for ensuring that NASCO is substantially in compliance with our internal operating policies and procedures and with any external legal, regulatory or contractual requirements.

Lauret plays an instrumental role in creating a risk-aware culture at NASCO – familiarizing NASCO associates with risk management and compliance requirements and educating our Plan customers on our ERM program. By managing a well-considered ERM strategy, she can balance our portfolio of identified and quantified risks with a portfolio of resources to derive real value for our customers. In this role, Lauret also has direct oversight for compliance, audit and legal.

With over 30 years experience in the health insurance industry supporting Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans, Lauret has spent nearly half of her career involved with national account processing on the NASCO Processing System. In 1999, she joined NASCO as Assistant Vice President of the Business Effectiveness Unit and served as the Chief Financial Officer from 2001 through 2006. Prior to beginning her NASCO tenure, Lauret held a variety of leadership and operational delivery roles with the EDS Health Care Strategic Business Unit with a focus on solution engineering, implementation and change management for the payer market.

Lauret is the president of the Atlanta Chapter of the Association for Strategic Planning and is a certified Strategy Management Professional. A member of the Technology Association of Georgia and Women in Technology (WIT), Lauret was a WIT Woman of the Year honoree in 2009 and 2010, and a finalist in 2011 and 2012. She is a frequent speaker on strategy development and execution, risk management and information technology security, change management and women in leadership.

A Georgia native, Lauret received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the University of Georgia and a Master of Business Administration degree, with a concentration in healthcare, from the Goizueta Business School of Emory University where she is still active as a mentor and coach.
